Victoria's Discover Sailing Day to run throughout January and February

Yacht clubs throughout Victoria will once again throw open their doors to local communities for the Summer 2014 Discover Sailing Day program running throughout January and February, giving families the opportunity to experience the adventurous and exciting world of sailing and yacht club life for free.

Following the success of the season’s first Discover Sailing Day in November, the annual state-wide event, now in its second year will give families the chance to participate in a variety of on and off-water activities at 23 yacht clubs, with more than 14 clubs hosting their open day on Sunday 12 January, 2014.

'More than 3,000 Victorians participated in last year’s inaugural Discover Sailing program, with over 200 taking up yacht club memberships and signing up for our ‘Learn to Sail’ programs,' said Yachting Victoria CEO Steve Walker.

'Last month’s Discover Sailing Day was a fantastic success and we hope to see some new faces come down this summer to get their feet wet and see for themselves how safe, fun and accessible sailing really is.'

With yacht clubs including the Chelsea Yacht Club, Frankston Yacht Club and Royal Geelong Yacht Club involved, plus many more around Melbourne and regional Victoria, Discover Sailing Day allows for people of all ages who may never have sailed before to participate in on and off-water activities.

Families will enjoy supervised sails around the bay with an experienced sailor, safety boat rides, club tours and various on-land games. Visitors at several clubs will also enjoy a BBQ lunch as they learn more about the programs and sailing courses available at their local club.

Discover Sailing Program Manager Gavin Wall said, 'This is a unique opportunity for the whole family to visit your local club and have a true sailing lifestyle experience – and you don’t even need to own your own boat.'

All boats and safety equipment required for the free activities will be supplied by yacht clubs. On the day, the Discover Sailing host will welcome visitors to the club, answer any questions and explain the activities taking place. Visitors require clothing and shoes that are able to get wet – non-marking soles are preferred – as well as sunscreen and a hat.

The Discover Sailing initiative is designed to increase participation in the sport and sailing lifestyle. Run by Yachting Victoria, the educational program uses its website, a range of promotional resources and a nationally-supported brand to encourage increased club involvement and new Event website
