Tropical Cyclone Zane upgraded to category two

Tropical Cyclone Zane has been now upgraded to a category two cyclone as it approaches the Far North Queensland coast. Zane is expected to make landfall between Orford Ness and Lockhart River late on Wednesday.

At last report it was 5o0 kilometres east-north-east of Cooktown and tracking west at 15 kilometres per hour.

The Bureau of Meteorolgy has issued a cyclone warningfor coastal areas from Cape Grenville to Cape Tribulation and local residents are being warned to expect winds of up to 150 kilometres an hour.

'We can expect destructive winds on the southern side of the cyclone as it crosses the coast,' Acting Police Superintendent Rhys Newton told ABC Radio this afternoon.

'Those destructive winds will bring minor damage to infrastructure, cause airborne debris and may interrupt services such as power and communications in the communities.'

Heavy rain and a storm tide are expected to cause flash flooding between Cape Grenville and Cape Sidmouth.

The Bureau of Meteorology is warning residents to protect their properties as much as possible and secure any boats.

Communities north of Cape Grenville to Mapoon and the Torres Strait Islands have also been told to be on alert.

Emergency Management Queensland says the system is not expected to cause problems once it has crossed the Cape.

'When it crosses across, it will have lost all of its strength by then,' said regional director Wayne Coutts.

'It'll still be a tropical low but the bureau are saying there's almost no possibility of it redeveloping as it crosses out into the Gulf.'
