Sail-World.com : Missing your sailing Email newsletters? Blame Gmail - Yahoo
Missing your sailing Email newsletters? Blame Gmail - Yahoo

Sail-World.com ©
In the process of breaking in Sail-World's new newsletter package, we have found that several of the major email systems have taken it on themselves to decide what you should and shouldn't read.

Apparently sailing is a hot topic on their naughty news list.

On checking why we had not received several test newsletters, Sail-World's technical staff checked Spam and Trash folders on Gmail and Yahoo, and found several of our newsletters in there along with those of several other sailing websites, to whom we had subscribed as well as news from US Sailing and other key sailing news sources.

Unbelievably, these mail 'providers' decided that we should not read them.

It's like your local postman going through your mail, deciding what you should and shouldn't receive and then tossing the rest in the hedge or a nearby rubbish tin.

We have been up the path with these guys in the past, they run so-called Black and White lists of email servers which they will routinely block, or will occasionally block.

It's beyond us why they think we need these Thought Police. Isn't that why God made the delete key?

Complaining to these guys - to borrow Sir Frank Packer's comment about the New York Yacht Club Race Committee in the 1970's - 'is about as useless as complaining to your Mother-in-law about your wife'. We've spent days on the phone with these guys in the past and got the bureaucratic run around, or call centres (when you can find their phone number), dealing with a different staff member every time you call etc.

We'd rather spend out time doing what we love, which is writing about sailing, getting great shots, and compiling the best sailing news in the world.

But here's what we suggest you do:

- Login in to your mail account - be it Gmail or Yahoo. You'll have to do this through the website www.gmail.com

- Check the Spam or trash folder (sometimes there are two)

- If there are Sail-World, Sailing Scuttlebutt or other sailing website email newsletters in there, mark them as Not Spam, or similar, and they should go through to your Inbox.

- Hopefully the mail system is intelligent enough to remember that when it gets another mail from that source, it too will go to your InBox and not the Spam/Trash folders

You won't see these emails in your Outlook or other mail system - they don't even get that far, and are stopped by Google and Yahoo. You have to go in directly through their website.

You’ll be surprised at what you find.

The alternative is to sign up to Apple's www.icloud.com, who seem to be more enlightened than the other two, get a new email address, and re-subscribe on that. We'be used that service for years, it is free and very compatible with all Apple devices.
