ABC Media reports that a fire has ripped through Middle Harbour Yacht Club at the Spit Mosman. Emergency services were called to the club just before 11:00pm on Sunday to find the building was well alight.
Forty firefighters worked for an hour to control the blaze at the Middle Harbour Yacht Club as it sent smoke across Sydney's lower north shore.
The damage was estimated to be more than $500,000, police said.
Reports suggest that Australian Sailing Team equipment stored immediately below the affected area has suffered considerable damage. More news as it comes to hand.
Superintendent Ian Krimmer from Fire and Rescue New South Wales said no-one was in the building at the time of the fire.
'Fire crews were on scene within six minutes,' Superintendent Krimmer said.
'They were successful in cutting this fire off and preventing it from spreading through the entire building complex.
'But the restaurant area at the Middle Harbour Yacht Club has sustained some extensive damage to that roof and restaurant area.'
Police have set up a crime scene and said early investigations suggested the fire started in a restaurant inside the club.
Superintendent Krimmer said the firefighters were able to contain the blaze before it spread to neighbouring property.
'There were fears that this fire would spread through the entire complex involving a number of other buildings including other restaurants and bar areas, but firefighters were successful in cutting that fire off,' he said.
