Australian marina industry research breaks new ground

by MIA on 22 Oct 2013 The Marina Industries Association (MIA) is pleased to announce a record number of Australian marinas have to date participated in the current round of data entry to support the 2013 Health of the Australian Marina Industry Survey.

When the research was last conducted in 2011 a total of 110 marinas participated. This represented 31% of Australia’s 356 marinas. As of 18 October, 127 marinas have entered data for the 2013 survey and the subsequent report that will be released early 2014.

MIA Executive Officer, Colin Bransgrove said what was particularly exciting was that to date over 50% of marinas in Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania have participated in the current survey and WA is expected to pass 50% in coming days.

'This will provide marinas and the broader industry in these states with excellent industry trend data and very reliable business performance benchmarking data. It will also enable an accurate number to be put on the economic and employment value of the marina industry in these states.'

Mr Bransgrove appealed to marina operators including Club marinas in QLD and NSW to get involved in the research project before data entry closes off at the end of October.

'In NSW, 39% of marinas have entered data and in QLD it currently stands at only 34.9% of the state’s marinas. By participating, marinas in these states will then have better quality data for not only their own benefit but for the betterment of their industry.

'If we can get increased data entry from these states it will improve the value of the research to lobby government and agencies that need to be made aware of the value of marinas and the issues that are preventing marinas from increasing capital expenditure and employing more staff. Industry in these states currently has significant issues with regulations and costs of doing business but without good data it is harder to lobby to reduce red tape and other impediments to doing business.'

Marinas that participate in the survey will receive the extensive 2013 research report free of charge. The report will sell for $349. Any marina still with queries about how to participate in the survey should contact the MIA.
