As we in the southern hemisphere move in to the depths of winter (mind you, with some days topping 24C where I am), it's easy to see how some dealers and marine industry businesses lament slower sales until spring bursts through with the promise of warmer, longer days and more time to spend in leisure pursuits.

But now is the ideal time to prepare, market, host open days and on-water experiences, which is what our Yacht Clubs, marinas and BIAs are gearing up for during spring as we move in to summer.

For its part, the BIA of Victoria is planning some 'come try' activities for would-be and current PWC owners, as well as traditional Try Boating days, and is contributing to the fifth annual Melbourne Leisurefest, 2-6 October at Sandown Racecourse, with all the latest boating, camping, fishing, RVs and 4x4 accessories. Winter is also a great time to head north to Queensland, with a great season of sailing ahead in the Whitsundays and north Queensland. From the Gold Coast to the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland has sailing covered. You can join the high profile sailors and fashionistas at Audi Hamilton Island Race Week, or join a crew for fun racing every Wednesday in Mooloolaba.
For first-timers, Tourism Queensland is encouraging visitors to 'play dot to dot' with the 74 islands of the Whitsundays on a bareboat charter yacht, or let a skipper (or motor) do all the hard work for you.
The Queensland Season of Sailing campaign, driven by Tourism and Events Queensland in partnership with sailing regatta organisers, regional tourism organisations and tourism operators, aims to drive tourists to the Sunshine State at this time of year to get into one of our favourite pastimes, boating in all its forms.
Director of five Queensland Season of Sailing regattas Dennis Thompson said the new Cup would help create a stronger interest in the series, promoting increased participation in multiple events across Queensland.
'The Cup will help raise awareness about the season among the sailing fraternity as well as encourage more Australians to experience one of Queensland's favourite pastimes – whether they're beginners or professionals.'
The race events remaining in Queensland's Season of Sailing 2013 are:
Brisbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht Race: 2-5 August
Airlie Beach Race Week: 9-16 August
Audi Hamilton Island Race Week: 17-24 August
Magnetic Island Race Week: 29 August–3 September
|Asian Superyachts can enjoy professional refit and servicing in Australia, not to mention superlative cruising grounds. .. © |
Our friends at Superyacht Australia have just been awarded one of the hard-fought for Asian Century Business Grant through Austrade. Superyacht Australia applied for the grant after identifying that Asia was becoming a growth destination for superyachts with many requiring repairs, routine maintenance and refits. Given the huge capability in Australia for servicing Superyacht requirements and their global reputation it was seen as critical for Australia to establish better links in Asia.
Superyacht Australia will visit four regions in Asia to promote Australia's capabilities and cruising grounds.
