 | | Sean Langman's TEAM AUSTRALIA's attempt to break the pasage race record from Sydney to Hobart Andrea Francolini © | In the on-going hunt to improve passage time records, Team Australia, on board an ORMA 60 trimaran, has just posted a Sydney to Hobart time of less than 30 hours, that is some 12 hours faster than the previous record held by the 100ft supermaxi Wild Oats XI. Earlier this week, Giovanni Soldini's team on the VOR 70 Maserati set a new Golden Route record, sailing the historical Clipper route from New York City to San Francisco via Cape Horn in 47 days, taking 10 days off the previous best time set by French sailor Yves Parlier in 1998.

Fabulous sailing again this year in the fifth edition of the RORC Caribbean 600; not quite record breaking conditions for line honours contenders but a very fast and relentless pace on board the 53 yachts. Shortly after crossing the finish line, Peter Harding on the popular 40 Degrees was informed he just beat the previous Class 40 record; 'Wow' exclaimed Peter! 'Right now all I can think about is the 40-mile beat back from Redonda, which was dead on the nose ... I don't think we could have got any wetter if we tried. I have done five Fastnets and none of them were as hard as this.'

After 104 days, Alessandro di Benedetto on Team Plastique crossed the finish line in Les Sables d'Olonne yesterday, putting an end to the 2012-13 Vendée Globe. Competing in yachts built in 1998, the last two racers to finish, Tanguy de Lamotte, who completed his circumnavigation earlier this week on Initiatives-Coeur, and di Benedetto crossed the start line last November with a significant disadvantage. Despite this, they both posted a finish time that would have qualified them for a top five place in the 2000-01 Vendée Globe race.

Some great news, we see growth in professional racing series as new team entries are announced. Team Korea will be participating in their Extreme 40 debut next week in Muscat; while Orion Racing, a new US-based team, will join the Multi One Design 70 circuit this year and be ready for the 2014 MOD 70 events.
Sail-World.com is always improving; our recent achievements include a dedicated Sail-World toolbar for your browser and the ability to read our news stories in the language of your choice. The Halifax International Boat show is on this weekend for our Atlantic readers.
Finally, congratulations to Canadian racers on their recent achievements. Sail Canada January Sailor of the Month was laser racer Isabella Bertold and Greg Douglas took home silver in the Finns at the 2013 ISAF World Cup Miami.
All the best!
