 Apologies for the fact that the Sail-World Asia newsletters have been rather 'quiet' over the last two weeks. Oddly enough, a small island 8nm from the equator in the Riau Archipelago doesn't have any wifi, or any other ‘fi' for that matter! We sent a batch of stories and pictures on a flashdrive by courier to Nongsa part way through the week, but there was an upload problem there too. Next up, a 37-hr journey from Nongsa to Boracay which didn't help. And now here in Boracay racing has been cancelled on account of that rarest of Asian regatta commodities – too much wind! So it's catch up time.
In Asia there was of course the Mt Gay Rum 2013 Neptune Regatta, a 70nm trip to the equator to meet King Neptune at 0 degrees 0.00 minutes, when the Trusty Shellbacks get to inaugurate the Slimy Pollywogs to the court of His Majesty. Some are still in recovery. A full roundup of stories below. The Neptune is an utterly unique regatta, more fun than a Friday night out on an expense account, and very much run ‘by sailors, for sailors.' SW Asia has now made the trip south to The Line three times, and we strongly advise you to book in for the 2014 edition. There will always be a cap on numbers for this event, because it involves accommodating and catering for 200+ sailors for four days on ‘Neptune Island' aka Pulau Sikeling. The logistics required to do that are huge – hence the numbers cap. Read the stories.
And then across to Boracay, where the fabled white sands and blue skies are suffering from some bad PR right now. No shortage of wind, though – the forecast yesterday promised 38kts+, and that was what caused the local Coastguard to stop all water activities for today.

Languages like French and Spanish are relatively easy – they have recognisable sailing terminology – but Chinese will be more tricky. We know of one publication that translated ‘traveller' as ‘tourist', and we are keen to avoid such errors. We look forward to expanding our audience across Asia by publishing in different languages when as many wrinkles as possible have been ironed out. Watch this space.
For those interested in seriously fast stuff, Sean Langman's Team Australia, said to be the ‘fastest sailing boat in the Southern Hemisphere', is out to break the outright Sydney-Hobart record currently held by Mari Cha IV at 1d 18h 27m 10s. Crew are on alert for a departure to be called by Roger ‘Clouds' Badham.
