The Greater Toronto Area had perfect weather for the inaugural weekend of the Tonto International Boat Show; many people dropped by the SailFest area to check out new boats on display; biggest attraction amongst racers and sailing enthusiasts alike is the new J/70 Speedster from J/Boats on its first appearance in Canada. Another premiere premiere is the North American launch of the Topaz Argo, drop by the Sobstad Sails and Marine booth, Canadian distributor for the UK built Topper Sailboats dinghies. 64 days of racing and the leaders are closing in on the Equator on their way home to Les Sables d'Olonnes; François Gabart (MACIF) has extended his lead slightly on Armel Le Cléach (Banque Populaire) and Jean-Pierre Dick (Virbac Paprec) who are both on the chase in his wake. Alex Thomson, who has opted for a more westerly route close to the South American coast on Hugo Boss, might threaten the leading trio if his gamble pays off; time will tell soon.
Now sailing in the Southern Atlantic, Giovanni Soldini and his team on Maserati could very well cross path with Vendée Globe racers as they barrel South towards Cape Horn on their New York-San Francisco record attempt. The international crew of nine on board the modified VOR70 yacht, including American offshore racer Ryan Breymaier, departed New York City in favourable conditions on December 31st; their goal is to improve the record currently held by Yves Parlier on Aquitaine Innovations. The 13225 miles between the two American cities via Cape Horn are full of history; clippers travelled this route regularly in the 19th century prior to the Panama Canal construction. Interestingly, until 1989, the 89 days course record belonged to Flying Cloud, a well known clipper from Boston, and was set back in 1854.

While on the topic of clipper and 70-foot yacht, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston has just unveiled the new Clipper 70 yacht in London this past week. Sporting bright red colours, this is the first yacht of a fleet of twelve that will be ready for the 2013-2014 Clipper Round the World Race where anyone with a sense of adventure can sign up to race.
Those sailors whose sense of adventure is complemented by a noticeable talent for story-telling, photo and video reporting can submit their resume to the Volvo Ocean Race organizers; the call is out to equip each entry in the 2014 race with a dedicated Media Crew Members. Check the Wanted Ad below!

In the Vendee Globe, the weekend is almost upon us and for the twelve sailors still in the race, they are not thinking about donning their glad rags, or disco dancing, but tacks, gybes and sail trimming.
