Along with a New Year, a new Sailing Season in Asia. Next week brings the 11th running of the Royal Langkawi International Regatta, one of the substantial collection of big boat regattas sprinkled around the region. The RLIR is the flagship event of the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club, and provides a good week's racing amongst some truly delightful scenery as well as a quality social programme of prizegiving parties and dinners. As a substantially seasoned regatta-goer on the Asian circuit, Sail-World Asia is quite sure that shorts and t-shirts sailing followed by cold beer and a good party is the way regattas are meant to be.
What defines ‘assistance'? Bernard Stamm has been DSQ'd from the Vendee Globe because a crewmember from the Russian research ship to which he tied up (while stopped to effect repairs) came aboard to take a line. There's more to the story, and Y&Y's Elaine Bunting asks some very pertinent questions. Take a look. Our sympathies are with Stamm, who is now appealing the Jury decision – after all, does someone taking a line (when Stamm wasn't actually racing anyway) make him go any faster – does it affect the racing per se? And what about all the information that skippers can get over the airwaves, coaching their repair efforts? Isn't that ‘assistance'?
