Sailing into 2013
 | | Sailing into the New Year . | Christmas was spent in so many ways by cruising sailors – many out on the water, away from the madness of pre-holiday shopping madness and riotous traffic. Yacht Clubs around Australia are celebrating in a multitude of ways, and CYCA cruising sailors are getting their boats ready to cruise (not race) to Tasmania in the New Year.
Several adventure sailors have actually spent a solo Christmas at sea. Spare a Yuletide thought for the indomitable Jeanne Socrates, swooping down the Pacific on her way to Cape Horn. Then there's Chinese solo sailor Guo Chuan, also crossing the Pacific hoping to round the Horn this summer.
Others are planning. In this week's news magazine sailing hero Pete Goss is just about to embark on a sailing kayak trip, circumnavigating Tasmania; and over in Thailand a would-be adventurer, out to break the world Laser distance sailing record is waiting for the money to fix a broken mast. Another – less competent – sailor has just been rescued after being lost off the coast of Vietnam without food for eight days. The rescue was the best Christmas present he could have wanted.
Whether you are on the water or celebrating on the shore, let's hope your Christmas was the one you dreamed of, that the New Year will be a new beginning, and that 2013 will bring you everything you want for yourself.
Sweet sailing!
