In just over a week, the 2012 Vendée Globe race has already claimed four victims while others have had to deal with various on board situations. First, it was Safran, Marc Guillemot was forced back with a damaged keel; then Kito de Pavant and Louis Burton sustained race-ending damage following collisions with fishing boats and finally, Sam Davies retired when Savéol was dismasted off Madeira. Fortunately, all skippers are safe. Finding a suitably sheltered location to climb up the rig, untangle wrapped spinnakers or review keel hydraulic systems have been on the daily menu for others. At the front of the fleet, Armel Le Cléac'h on Banque Populaire is building a solid lead after passing François Gabart, the early leader on MACIF, who with Dick, Stamm, Riou and Thomson make up the lead group. Port Credit Yacht Club's local J/24 guru, Rossi Milev, has placed second at the J/24 North Americans at the Florida Yacht Club in Jacksonville, FL. Rossi and his crew edged ahead of competitors Travis Odenbach and Mike Ingham from Rochester Yacht Club to claim the Lake Ontario bragging rights; 29 boats took part in the competition. Rossi's was the sole Canadian entry.
Also this week, check out Sail-World New Zealand editor Richard Gladwell's report following his wild ride onboard ETNZ's AC72 in Auckland, NZ. Hanging on for dear life as the crew put the powerful wing sail catamaran through its pace; Richard kept an eye on the instruments and witnessed on-water speeds in the mid-40's!

While on the topic of high speed; Paul Larsen and the Vestas Sailrocket team report a new speed record of 59 knots in their purpose designed craft; for Canadian landlubbers, that is 110 km/hour!
