It is well understood that the Vendee Globe is the ultimate example of 'to win, first you have to finish.' Just a couple of days into the race, and there's one keel missing and one collision with a fishing boat on the scoreboard. The last VG had an attrition rate in excess of 40% - 20 boats this year would indicate there are at least six more casualties to come before the race is over. That's tough stuff.
It was a busy weekend in Hong Kong with a major pursuit race (the Lipton Trophy), the Tommy Bahama Around the Island Race, and a smaller version of the ATIR, the Around Middle Island Race. That means there were probably in excess of 2,500 sailors afloat over two days - recreational boating is alive and well in this town.
Next weekend - Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta starts at Port Klang (Royal Selangor Yacht Club). If you're a sailor, you should be there - or take up knitting.
