Snowbirds, lightning, cooking, night navigation and more...

Lightning - unavoidable if you are already at sea  .
Everything from cooking to lightning, from tales of the 'floating snowbirds' to advice night navigation – that's this week's Sail-World Cruising News Magazine.

On the serious side, there's a court trial underway in which two British sail-trainers are accused of failing in their responsibilities to their clients.

In the jubilation stakes Italian sailors are congratulating the first-ever Italian sailing boat to negotiate the Northwest Passage and electronics firm Furuno are basking in yet another win for their 'TimeZero Touch' technology.

The International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) has published newly formulated universal guidelines for boat building, which would make great reference material for anyone wanting to build their dream boat. However you have to be a member to get access to the information, so I guess they are using it as a membership drive as well.

If you are anywhere near Florida there's a new tip sheet out for anchoring, and cruisers are hailing it as very useful; and no matter where you sail there's a new free website to check out, www.sQuidd.io , for knowledge-sharing and boat-swapping.

Invasive sea squirt species confirmed in Strangford Lough

The Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) has confirmed that a colonial sea squirt discovered in a recent survey of marinas and harbours is the invasive non-native species Didemnum vexillum commonly known as ‘carpet sea squirt'. The identification was confirmed when larvae from the samples were examined by microscope at the NI Environment Agency laboratories in Lisburn to confirm the species.... [more]
