Good news and bad news. Let's start with the good news.
Sam Chan and the Free Fire boys are definitely on a roll, having just blitzed the Hainan Race record with a new time of 28h 43m 54s for the 360nm. Add that to their perfect score in the China Coast Regatta last week, and they probably have an eye on the China Coast Raceweek Overall prize. The race used to start south of Hong Kong Island, near Yuen Kok light, and this was the first time the event has gone from the RHKYC Club Line in the harbour - we estimate that added at least 15nm to the elapsed distance.
Of course, all things are relative, so maybe it's not such good news for the smaller boats chasing a handicap result. That, we can only wait and see.
Bad news for Oracle's USA 17 that tripped and fell during training, and ended sans wing, upside down, badly damaged and washed out to sea. A capsized AC72 is a sad sight indeed, regardless who you support. Meanwhile, on the other side of the Pacific, maybe the Kiwis are being just a little more conservative - at least, for a while. There's nothing like driving past a nasty crash to make you slow down, right?
