Welcome to Sail-World Canada
The Vendée Globe is just around the corner!
 | | Spinnaker drop onboard BERENICE BIS (ITA) - 2012 Rolex Swan Cup © Rolex/Carlo Borlenghi | Less than two months to go before twenty IMOCA 60 yachts line up for the start in Les Sables d'Olonne. It's already been four years since we followed Canadian skipper Derek Hatfield in the 2008-09 edition of the legendary Vendee Globe. Unfortunately, North Americans skippers are absent from the French dominated entry list this year but this seventh edition will still capture all my attention over the next months.
While we won't see the record breaking 30 skippers from 2008, many of the greatest names in single-handed ocean racing will be back for another round of the planet on November 10th. Dominique Wavre and Mike Golding will be on their fourth attempt; it will be a third participation for jean-Pierre Dick, Jean Le Cam, Jean Riou, Bernard Stamm and Alex Thompson. Familiar names looking for their second challenge include Sam Davies, Kito de Pavant, Marc Guillemot and Armel Le Cléac'h.
I, for one, will miss two-time winner Michel Desjoyaux from this edition; who can forget that after taking the start in 2008, he returned to port to fix the boat and, with a 41 hours setback, caught up to the fleet to eventually win the race. Vincent Riou is the only previous winner (2004-05) to participate in the 2012 race.

Check out our reports from the Star North Americans held in Hamilton, ON and the latest MOD 70 European Tour results, where Michel Desjoyaux Team Foncia holds second place in the rankings. We also share Carlo Borlenghi's excellent images from the Rolex Swan Cup in Sardinia; Carlo recently won the first prize in the 2012 International Excellent Sailing Photograph Exhibition.

All the best!
