 Slice it whichever way you like, 15 podium positions from 15 legs in a circumnavigating race is pretty impressive. Put it another way – 15 offshore races and nothing lower than a third place. Richard Hewson and his crew in the latest edition of the Clipper Race have done just that, so hats off.
Hewson and the Gold Coast Australia crew won 12 out of the 15 legs of the race, two thirds and a solitary second. That's impressive. And it's not as if it was the same crew all the way round – Clipper crews are composed of full-timers (who ‘go all the way') and part-timers (who do bits, or ‘legs'). To be able to skipper a constantly-changing crew into a sequence of 15 podium-winning performances is nothing less than remarkable. Hats off again, please, and stand up as well.

crews go head to head in their first offshore. If the glass-out conditions at the start stayed in it would give the HKG team a huge advantage - just the sort of weather we see in Asia all too often!
How much does it cost to build a 100' supermaxi racer? Surprise surprise, there are fewer of them around now than there were five years ago. Next, how much does it cost to build a brand new J Class yacht? Mmmm, and there are more and more of them coming along - ask Royal Huisman! Maybe it's the focus of interest that has changed, not the availability of funds themselves? Either way, there is no shortage of superyachts presently tearing up the waters off Cowes.
Singapore's no 1 regatta is on the cards for 4, 5, 11 August, but it seems a shame they can't fit it all into one weekend. Very little chance of attracting out-of-town entries with that scheduling.
Four days until the Olympics, so if you have tv coverage wherever you are, get the beer in the fridge, get settled, and get practiced at being an armchair sportsman for a fortnight. We'll keep you posted on the sailing even if it doesn't get on air.
