We had the final result of the Volvo Ocean Race figured out a few days ago, and it didn't change after the Galway inshore race – so congratulations to Groupama who carried off the trophy after scoring the important points during the second half of the round-the-world event. Now all the prizes have been given out, and the fat lady has not only sung but left the stage and gone home. It is known that at least two of the teams have committed themselves to a two-race programme, but with new One Design boats on the horizon it's going to be a different event next time for sure. Just wondering, though, why the designer of the last three winning boats isn't the person producing the OD...?
Bjorn Hansen has taken this year's World Match Race Tour by the throat, following up a victory in Korea with another win in Marstrand, Sweden.
On a rather different sort of craft, Alain Thebault and his ‘L'Hydroptere corsairs' are readying themselves for a tilt at the Los Angeles-Hawaii ‘Transpac' record, set at 4d 19h 31m by Olivier de Kersauson in 2005. That's an average speed of 19.17kts. No doubt about it, to beat the record, first they have to get their flying boat there in one piece. It's going to be interesting, come what may.
How far ahead do you start soliciting entries for an event? In the case of the Rolex Sydney-Hobart Race, as far as possible. NOR and Application for Entry below. Only 171 days to Boxing Day.
