Catch up on the news from around the world for cruising sailors

Welcome to another edition of the Sail-World Cruising news magazine, where we bring you the top news about what's happening in the world of the non-competing sailor.

Mehitable rescue - the sailors are brought on board a bulk carrier  .. .
You have to feel sympathy for our good friends in need, the rescuers, sometimes.

They have to overcome many privations and frustrations in order to keep up with the amazing tally of sea rescues existing today.

Two such stories this week, one on unprepared sailors, the other about hoax calls.

If the coast guard is responding to an unnecessary or hoax call, apart from being dispiriting for the would-be rescuers, it could be keeping them from responding to a real need – and is potentially putting their lives at risk each time.

How's Your Float Plan? Does It Include These Seven?

All prudent sailors will leave a clear, concise float plan with a friend, relative, or neighbor, (and/or depending where you sail, an abbreviated one with rescue authorities direct). That way, in case you fail to show up when you say you will, they can contact the authorities with solid information. US Hoaxes point to the general problem of hoax distress calls

Two recent hoax distress calls in the USA, in New Jersey and Tampa, costing major disruption and hundreds of thousands of dollars, have drawn attention to the issue that is real and ongoing for rescue services, no matter in what country. Coral reef fish coping with rising CO2

Researchers maintain that some coral reef fish may be better prepared to cope with rising CO2 in the world's oceans – thanks to their parents. Researchers at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies (CoECRS) today reported in the journal Nature Climate Change, encouraging new findings that some fish may be less vulnerable to high CO2 and an acidifying ocean than previously feared....
