There's a meeting coming up which many cruising sailors may like to attend, held by Yachting Australia at the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia on 27th July.
If there are any issues that cruising sailors would like aired, like perhaps category requirements for cruising yachts or the annual sailing awards (which have no categories for cruising achievements), or any other item which is getting cruising skippers excited where you are, put the date in your diary after reading the article.
It was a wild week of weather, with much damage up and down the east coast, while in Queensland two solo sailors lost their yachts in separate incidents. And we're glad to pay tribute to some heroes from a Fijian resort, who could have ignored the SOS from a sinking Kiwi yacht, but instead put their own lives potentially at risk by responding to the call.
There's also a depth of practical advice in this edition, with two products making it as 'Product of the Week' – Self-fit terminals for your rigging have been upgraded and a very handy tide application is now available for iPads - which seem to be surging in popularity for many kinds of nautical use. Then there's the article on magic depth curves. What are they? Read it all from John Jamieson.
We couldn't ignore the 1,000 boat gathering for Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee (even though there was not a sail in sight) and there's some great images; if you ever embark on a long voyage where your physical attributes are not to be used you'll value the exercises suggested by The Triton; we congratulate Britain's RYA Sailing Club of the Year, as an example of the spirit which makes the sport of sailing strong; the west coast of Canada is highlighted as a great sailing destination; and Doina Cornell, daughter of that veteran of 13 books on sailing, Jimmy Cornell, has written a book of her own, about what it was like to spend a childhood sailing with her Dad.
