Sail-World has had great representation at this year's Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS). It always drags boat enthusiasts in droves, but this year's show was spectacular. We've put all the SCIBS stories together at the end of the newsletter, so if you weren't there, this is the next best thing!
I spent a few days several years ago sailing from Moscow to St Petersburg – I use the term loosely, sadly, because we were on one of the small luxury canal ships that they use to transport rich Americans to observe the country's heritage without discomfort. I was fortunate enough to be a guest, and what a journey it was. While many of the well-padded Americans were more interested in the ship's food than the sights, a few of us were intoxicated with the experience, particularly ending up in that bewitching city of St Petersburg, a climax that didn't disappoint.
...and now, you may be able to sail Russia on your own yacht! For many a cruising sailor in, or headed for, Europe, this will be an adventure too enticing to ignore, and they really do mean yachts and superyachts, as it is limited to 'no more than 18 people on board.' The Russian President (still Dmitry Medvedev) signed the new Russian Inland Water Transport Code last Thursday.
There is still a hitch, though, and only time will tell when and how this will pan out. The statement by RIA Novosti said that the vessels would be subject to 'compulsory pilotage' unless 'otherwise stipulated by international treaties'. Sounds a little expensive. Maybe that means some lobbying will be in order by our national yachting organisations to bring about such treaties...
One greatly rewarding piece of news during the week was the break-through with the Royal Australian Navy by the MOB rescue system, SeaScoopa. Nice to see a local invention make good.
Some of the other highlights of this weeks edition are: A hand-held laser flare which could replace the old-fashioned dangerous type - once lasers of this type are permitted in Australia; a cruising sailor tells of his difficulty finding where the sharks and crocodiles in the paradisical waters of the San Blas off the coast of Panama; preliminary findings on the recent Farallon yachting tragedy in the US comes up with some old facts of life; stories of adventures completed and those still in the planning, including the re-enactment of Shackleton's epic survival sail in the Antarctic.
