The last regatta of the unofficial 'Asian season' is progress right now - warm winds, warm seas and cold beers are on the menu at the Samui Regatta 2012. Leader after two days' racing is Marcus Blackmore and his band of Hooligans, sailing the TP 52 Team Premier with which they cleaned up on their debut Asian appearance at Langkawi earlier this year. But there are three more days to go, and some hungry chasers in the pack right behind.
Australia's marine mega-fest, the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show, is under way too, and by way of contrast the 5th Korea International Boat Show opens its doors tomorrow. KIBS has a record of doing things BIG - especially when it comes to occasions like an opening ceremony - so we are looking forward to seeing what they turn out. Korea is still in the throes of trying to build a leisure marine infrastructure and encouraging people to get out on the water - simultaneously. It's not an easy trick to pull off. Progress report soon.
Match Race Germany was won by Phil Robertson on a countback after the wind took a sabbatical on finals day - now feel sorry for the WMRT competitors who had to get on plane immediately and get to Korea to start all over again at the Korea Match Cup which starts tomorrow. A few red eyes among the fleet, to be sure.
And if you have ever thought you'd like to swap the tropical breeze at Asian regattas for the icy blasts of Antarctic waters, then read the story on the forthcoming re-enactment of Shackleton's epic voyage to South Georgia. Brrr...
