 Throwing the Tornado out of the Olympics was just the beginning. Now that ISAF, in their relentless search for tv friendliness, have ditched windsurfing (for Rio 2016) in favour or kitesurfing, the commentaries are coming thick and fast. Bruce Kendall and Neil Pryde stories below, and then we hear that Spain and Venezuela have disowned their representatives' votes. And then there's the suggestion that a number of other votes may have been cast incorrectly because the delegates didn't understand the question, so to speak. (If they had ever taken a Hong Kong Pleasure Vessel Operator's Certificate exam the practice would have stood them in good stead).
On a slightly less contentious note, we are delighted to see an apparent resurgence in match racing in Asia - and that's not just the visiting professionals in the WMRT. The RHKYC hosted the hugely successful BNP Paribas Match Racing International Regatta last weekend, and the Malaysian Match Racing Circuit has just run its first event. Both regattas are ISAF Grade 3, and the latter involved the organisational expertise of T-Best Events, gleaned from the running of the Monsoon Cup. Nice crossover - or should that be trickle-down? The RHKYC also ran an Umpires Clinic with a view to boosting the number of match racing umpires in Asia - and therefore facilitating more events of this nature. Watch this space for the next dial-up.
A sad note to end with: Frank Bethwaite, the man that made small boats go fast, has passed away. We met Frank when he came to Hong Kong many years ago, when the Hong Kong STA purchased a number of B-14 skiffs. He was a man of limitless imagination, and equally great kindness and patience. No question was too daft for him to answer, no explanation too simple for him to engage in. Wherever Frank is now, we are sure there is a steady 15kts blowing from whichever point of the compass sends a warm breeze.
