Three bullets for Carbonado at Charleston Race Week!
The Semaine Olympique Française de Voile is the fourth event on the ISAF Sailing World Cup circuit where many members of the Canadian Sailing Team will be racing this weekend. Bjorn and Clark will be looking for great sailing conditions in Hyères in the south of France as they prepare for the 2012 Star World Championships next month at the same venue. With less than 100 days before the London games, teams have to maximize all their time on the water.
While on the Olympic topic, reports and recommendations are out following the extensive evaluation of new equipment for the 2016 games in Brazil. Check the details for the Mixed Multihull and the Women's Skiff in the stories below.
Cessna Citation leads the way in the Global Ocean race as the fleet crosses the equator; other than negotiating the meanders of the Guiana current, it's been relatively easy sailing for the pat few days. Earlier this week, Yvonne Beusker replaced Nico Budel on the Dutch Sec. Hayai team after a short stop in the Brazilian port of Fortaleza; Budel was called off the race by personal business back in Holland.
After a great first race in the Bay of Biscay last week-end, Diane Reid's hopes to have One Girl's Ocean Challenge on the start line of the single-handed Pornichet Select have come to an end yesterday after on-going challenges with the autopilots. Diane opted to play it safe and watch the race from shore. Read the full story on her blog here.
Charleston Race Week is currently on; after two days of racing, Carbonado, the new Canadian MC38 team lead by Rob and Sandy Butler have posted three bullets to lead the PHRF A scoreboard, while Jackpot from the Sarnia Yacht Club is third in the Viper 640 one-design class. More action this weekend!
The Volvo Ocean Race fleet is set for the DHL In-Port Race in Itajai today, followed by the Leg 6 start tomorrow. Both events will be broadcasted on the VOR Livestream feed; check out the official website http://www.volvooceanrace.com. In the news earlier this week, the international race jury dismissed the protest over Telefonica carrying an illegal number of sails stating ambiguity in the rules.
Finally, on behalf of the Canadian sailing community, I wish to extend my condolences to the families and friends of Low Speed Chase following the terrible tragedy in the Farallones Race last Saturday. Fair winds.
All the best!

|Volvo Ocean Race: Camper finishes, Leg 5 is completed |
After 31 days racing Camper finally crossed the Leg 5 finish line in Itajaí, Brazil, just after noon, at 12:35:44 UTC, having sailed an average of 1,400 nautical miles further and 11 days longer than their counterparts on the podium. Relief was visible on the faces of the 11 crew as they claimed fourth place in the race from one of their home ports, Auckland, New Zealand to Brazil, earning them... [more]
