Volvo Ocean Race, 2016 Evaluations and more sailing news

Welcome to this edition of our UK newsletter from Sail-World.com.

Equipment Evaluations for the 2016 Olympic Sailing Competition are underway in Santander, Spain. Sail-World has the latest news and videos.

Across the world in New Zealand, the Volvo Ocean Race competitors have left Auckland on Leg 5 of the race, headed for Itajai (Brazil). Facing rough weather and building seas, Telefonica skippered by Iker Martinez (ESP) was the early leader blast reaching at 18 knots, but the latest news is of a protest over the sail inventory and Camper has snatched the lead. On board Puma Ocean Racing two crew members were injured in the brutal conditions, one is much recovered and the other might be a Cape Horn drop off.

Government recognises RYA objection to amended red diesel declaration

Government has confirmed today that they have no intentions of making it unlawful for red diesel bought in the UK to be used outside UK territorial waters. The RYA had objected in the strongest terms to Government's original amendments published on 20 February 2012 and made it clear that restricting the use of marked ‘red' diesel to UK waters would not be acceptable.... Another light day with a fitful wind produced just one race on Wednesday in Scarlino, Italy. Sail-World's Richard Gladwell was on the water and followed the six strong fleet from the start to when the fleet exited the Waitemata and headed from Cape Horn. 2016 Equipment Evaluations - Skiffs and multihulls Day 4 + Video

Day four in Santander began with light winds which led to sailing being briefly postponed. Despite waiting for breeze, it was a productive morning for the female skiff sailors as they joined Evaluation Panel members Adrienne Cahalan (AUS) and Sylvia Vogl (AUT) in an informal session where they all gave feedback on the skiffs they'd sailed so far.... Tynemouth Sailing Club sailed the long distance Blaydon Race upstream from the Newburn Slipway on the tidal River Tyne on Sunday March 18th. Conditions were quite tricky on the first and longest lap with a generally light and very shifty wind on a fading flood tide.... [more]

Irish Fireball Frostbite Series at Dun Laoghaire Motor YC

The Fireball Frostbite Series' penultimate race at Dun Laoghaire Motor Yacht Club was a sustained session of snakes and ladders for most of the fleet who took part in the six lap race. A reduced fleet, due probably to it being a Bank Holiday weekend with St Patrick's Day on Saturday and Mother's Day on Sunday, was set a six-lap course with the weather mark in the wind shadow... This year, the event is setting out to break a new Guinness World Record. The first day of the 2012 Finn Junior and Senior European Championship in Scarlino Italy was characterised by a shifty 8-10 knot north-westerly, moderate temperatures and some great racing. Marine Massif 2012 - Academy Soloists take on impressive line-up
