Medical emergency, Volvo in Auckland and more sailing news

Welcome to this edition of Sail-World.com's UK newsletter.

Excitement in New Zealand as the Volvo Ocean Race teams have finally reached Auckland. The triumph for Franck Cammas' Groupama 4 team was tinged with worry, as Groupama sustained damage on the way to the leg 4 final destination. Repair crews are now hard at work, hampered by the Auckland weather. Editor at Large Richard Gladwell was on hand to capture the excitement as the teams finished.

In sunny Brisbane, Australia the Laser World Masters Championships are underway on Moreton Bay and drama for Clipper Round the World yacht De Lage Landen, forced to divert for a medical evacuation. After meeting a Japanese Coast Guard vessel and transferring the injured crew member De Lage Landen is now back on course and headed for Oakland, California.

B14 Winter Series finale at the Hoo Freezer

B14 Winter Series final leg was held over the weekend at the Hoo Freezer. The B14 flying circus headed down the M2 to Hooness for what was hoped to be a classic Freezer on the Medway. However, the joker's card was to be played again with sun and forecast of 2 – 4 knots. So the hopes of a building breeze were being anticipated. Volvo Ocean Race teams race against time to finish repairs

Volvo Ocean Race Leg 4 winners Groupama are on track to finish repairs to their damaged bow by Tuesday evening despite the Auckland rain that hampered the six shore teams' progress. Brass Monkey 7 at Liverpool YC

The Brass Monkey 7 got underway at Liverpool Yacht Club amid a forecast of light winds and a very big tide that perhaps contributed to the cautious turnout of eight yachts in the lock in the morning time. Puma Ocean Racing, looked gone for all money a few days after the start of Leg 4 slipping back to be almost 300nm astern of the race leader at one point. However she placed her trust in the weather routing software and was quickly back in contact with the pack and then edged up into second place - which she held all the way to the finish line.... Camper came close to taking a last second victory on the fourth leg, after charging up the Rangitoto Channel and then continuing at full pace once inside the Waitemata Harbour and heading for the finish off the Viaduct Harbour. The margins were more of what is expected on a Wednesday night race than one that has taken almost 20 days and 5,000 nautical miles.... [more]

Volvo Ocean Race - Puma's fight for second pays off

Puma crossed the line at 11:55.43 local/22:55.43 UTC in Auckland, New Zealand, completing the Volvo Ocean Race leg from Sanya, China, in 20 days, 3 hours, 57 minutes and 50. 'We had to fight for this second-place finish, and we're very pleased,' said skipper Ken Read. 'It was a combination of boat speed, the ability of the boat to handle the conditions, and of course the guys on board.'... [more]

On the penultimate day of racing at Bacardi Miami Sailing Week (BMSW) presented by EFG Bank, the temperature hovered around 80 and an east-southeast breeze of 12 knots blew. Racing returns to Budworth SC

The first racing in Budworth since 2011 commenced on Sunday, and the effect of a winter layoff was evident in the results. Fourteen boats competed in a cold, squally wind. Our one visitor, Jack Banks and Penny Jeffcoate from Dovestone SC sailng a Scorpion showed the locals how to do it, notching up two first places and one second.... [more]
