The leg finish concludes the stop-start nature of the last two legs, which were disrupted due to measures adopted by trace organisers to avoid the potential for attack by pirates operating out of Somalia. This final part of Leg 3 from Maldives to Sanya, has been unusual to say the least. Essentially the outcome of the leg was decided in the Malacca Straits between Sumatra and Malaysia when Telefonica made a move towards the Sumatran coast, got the breeze - some claim off a convenient thunderstorm - and scooted away at speeds into the double digits, while at least two of the crews were left near-becalmed. Once the fleet exited the final landfall east of Singapore, Telefonica had once again stamped her authority on the leg and was set for her third leg win. That feat had not been achieved since the Peter Blake skippered Steinlager 2 won all six legs in the then Whitbread Round the World course. Most obviously that Telefonica is a fast boat, well sailed, and doesn't make mistakes. Simply, none of the others can claim to tick all of those boxes - and that really is the story of the race so far. The only imponderable is the performance of the boats in hard-driving downwind conditions - of which we saw some on the latter stages of Leg 1. However the next two legs will really be the test.
