 Canadian Sailing Team vying for Olympic berths!
Canadian Sailing Team members are still competing at the Perth 20011 ISAF Sailing World Championships for an opportunity to represent Canada at the next London 2012 Olympic games. Check out the regular CYA reports from the Fremantle shoreside.
Loick Peyron and his team, on the amazing Maxi Banque Populaire V trimaran, will be traveling just South of the Olympic athletes as the reach Australia's Cape Leeuwin, just 18 days after their start from France. They currently hold a 2200 miles lead on the Jules Verne round the world record held by Groupama 3. With speeds reaching 40 knots, the team has to hold back for fear of breaking something but Banque Populaire has taken everything in stride so far. Simply incredible!
The Volvo Ocean Racing teams are getting for the Cape Town in-port race tomorrow; not a small task for three teams who have been working around the clock getting their yacht ready after retiring from Leg 1. To make matters worse, it appears they will not be provided with the opportunity to ease in the new repairs as a 25 knots breeze is expected for the local race; great news for waterfront spectators. The in-port race will be broadcasted live on the VOR official website, complete with Virtual Eye 3-D graphic display. The start of Leg 2 is on Sunday.
Act 9 of the Extreme Sailing Series, the final and deciding event of the season, is currently taking place in Singapore. Day 3 racing got underway under threatening stormy clouds yesterday; the action-packed close quarter racing replays are on the Extreme Sailing website at http://www.extremesailingseries.com/
Those who followed the Audi MedCup circuit were sad to hear the popular circuit was cancelled for 2012; citing challenging financial times, the organizers are taking a year off to consider their options for the future. Unfortunately, it leaves the exciting TP52 and new Soto 40 fleets without a racing home next year.
The Transat BtoB fleet is almost straight North from the departure point in the Caribbean; all the skippers being cautious to get across to the East too early and get caught in the masive depression that lingers over the Atlantic. I expect they will reach the top of the system this week-end and catch a favourable downwind ride to France; a drag race across the Atlantic looks promising as most of the Open 60 yachts are still in a very tight pack.
In the Western Indian Ocean, the Global Ocean Race Class 40 yachts have all negotiated the ice limit gates; it's a tight race at the front with less than miles separating the three leaders: Cessna Citation, Campagne de France and BSL.
The television viewing premiere of The O CANADA Project is this Sunday evening on the CBC Documentary Channel. The film tells the story of the rebuilding of the Spirit of Canada Open 60 as a training platform for Canada's sailors. All the details in the story.
