(Image: Tristan da Cunha)  Amory Ross/Puma Ocean Racing/Volvo Ocean Race© Welcome to Sail-World.com's Volvo Ocean Race Newsletter for 4 December 2011 As expected the final stages of Leg 1 were something of a soldiers course for Telefonica, Camper and Groupama, as they recorded a one, two, three into Cape Town. Camper and Groupama paid the price of navigational and strategic decisions in the opening stages of the leg. Telefonica sailed a flawless leg to deservedly take line honours and maximum leg points. Camper should consider them selves lucky to be second overall, and within striking distance of the lead. Groupama realize that they probably don't have the luxury of splitting from the fleet any longer, and will have to mix it with the other five competitors. But that is the Lesson of the Leg for all competitors. This will be a close race, and may be a war of attrition. Team Telefonica, skippered by Iker Martinez from Spain heads for the finish on Leg 1 of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12 from Alicante, Spain to Cape Town, South Africa at 18:14:25 UTC.   Ian Roman/Volvo Ocean Race Today, the bookend was placed on the First Leg, with the hoisting of Puma's Mar Mostro on board a container ship in open ocean off the remote archipelago of Tristan da Cunha. Puma's is a remarkable story in the annals of Round the World races of all types. In this edition of Sail-World's Volvo Ocean race newsletter we have several stories from the remote archipelago in the South Atlantic courtesy of the Puma Ocean Racing team. While the on the water racing is complete for Leg 1, the shore crews of Abi Dhabi, Team Sanya, and Puma Ocean Racing have plenty of work ahead of them to get their respective charges onto the start line in just over six days time for the Inport Race. In this edition we have stories on the state of play of the teams – with Abu Dhabi's mast construction; Team Sanya's hull rebuild; and Puma's race aboard Team Bremen and fitting her second mast in Cape Town. Camper with Emirates Team New Zealand, finishes second on leg 1 of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12 from Alicante, Spain to Cape Town, South Africa, at 10:48:04 UTC.  Marc Bow/Volvo Ocean Race The start of the second leg is scheduled for 11 December for an unspecified destination, where the yachts will be loaded aboard a transport ship and taken to the next stopover at Abu Dhabi. This decision has been forced on race organisers by the prevalence of pirates off the east African coast, and the practical impossibility of individually protecting the yachts from boarding and seizure. The operation went off safely, team general manager Kimo Worthington reported on Friday evening. 'Loading operations on Tristan have been completed safely and we'll be leaving in the next hour or so,' Worthington said....
