Fishing for compliments from the all-important wife

Let's face it, boats are the luxury you should only allow yourself once the home and car are in order, though few of us have the patience to wait that long.

In many cases, the 'house' is never in order - there's always a pool that could be put in, an extension built, a family holiday taken to Disneyland, a share portfolio bought etc.

Boats are a big investment, not only in money but leisure time - the hours enjoyed afloat could alternatively be spent tending the garden or in the company of the loved ones you see all too rarely during your working week. You burn thousands of brownie points each time you go out.

Consequently, the outlay on a boat has to be justified, in which case your bank manager and accountant will be pushovers compared to the spouse and kids. You have to convince them of the lifestyle aspects.

While there are exceptions, mums generally don't get their kicks from being miles offshore in a small boat, up to their armpits in berley and bait, burping and farting while waiting for the big fish that never bites.

That said, most women would happily sit in a sheltered cove, dangling a line or perhaps reading a book, while hubbie and the kids fish for small fry. They also like to cruise around the waterfront homes, watch their youngsters waterski and sip a chilled white wine.

For that, you don't need a specialised fishing rig with cumbersome iceboxes and livebait tanks, but rather comfortable seats and dry shelter.

Throughout my years as a boating magazine editor I was lucky enough to have a number of long-term loan trailerboats of various sizes and styles. Most were fishing-oriented rigs, because we needed clear space for photographers to operate, but the only thing I fished out of them were old champagne corks and twist tops when tidying up.

Fishing boat builders will ignore the woman's vote at their own peril ...
