Chicago Mackinac and Cat Claws To Victory In Transatlantic Race

The Sail-World team is assembling in Chicago ahead of the Race to Mackinac - presented by Veuve Clicquot.

We will be bringing you detailed news from the build up for this 362 boat event. Its blowing down Lake Michigan towards Chicago now and a little while ago, walking along near Navy Pier, it seemed like there was a faint smell of fudge. This morning we bring you a report on the very Great Lakes one design fleet the T-10's. There will be 24 in this years event.

At the start of the 2011 Transatlantic Race, skipper Kenny Read was careful to point out that Mar Mostro, Puma Ocean Racing's now-generation Volvo Open 70, had not been optimized for racing under IRC. In fact, the Puma lads were using the race as a way to check their speed and sails, gain offshore experience as a team, and to deliver their boat across the pond (and thus fulfilling their qualifying miles for the VOR) to their new training base in Lanzarota, in the Canary Islands.

Yet despite a significant handicap disadvantage, Read and company won IRC 1, beating Rambler 100 on corrected time. 'We entered the race with zero expectations, just like the other IRC handicap racing we've done this year,' Read said. 'We wanted to learn the boat and the crew... We're pleasantly shocked. We didn't break anything, the sails held up, the team is certainly coming together, and there's not a single negative to this race. It was a great experience.' Meanwhile, in IRC 3, Huntington Sheldon's Reichel/Pugh 65, Zaraffa won her class by a considerable margin. Sheldon, now 80, won both line honors and overall win in the 2003 Daimler Chrysler North Atlantic Challenge (now the Transatlantic Race), and he is believed to be the oldest competitor in this year's event. Far, far to the west, boats racing to Hawaii in the Transpacific Race recently experienced the even-lighter winds that had been forecasted. While frustrating for the sailors, it reshuffled the deck a bit, allowing for some lane changes. 'We've passed the half-way point,' said Kevin McMeel aboard the Open 60, O Canada. 'Another dark night sailing blindly except for instruments. Tense times as the crew manages the survival of the one remaining downwind A2 spinnaker. Still on same tack as when the race started; no gybes in 1,100 miles of sailing.' America's Cup: Emirates Team NZ signs with Dell and launches new boat Richard Gladwell, Emirates Team New Zealand have announced a partnership with US based multinational, technology company Dell computers. The team will be looking to make up one of the 'holes' in its 2007 America's Cup campaign – which was in the area of applied technology, which by the estimate of CEO, Grant Dalton, cost the team about 10 seconds a leg in that event.... Transpac 2011 - Dang, the Weather Guys were right Kimball Livingston, For Transpac 2011, lighter winds, as predicted, and a bit of lane-shifting re-sorted parts of the racing fleet overnight, but James McDowell's SC70, Grand Illusion, continued to run 1-1, first in the Sleds and first overall with about 1,200 miles to go at 0800 roll call.
