Transatlantic Bound—Sailing News from the U.S. and Beyond

Start 1, Sunday, June 26 off of Castle Hill in Newport, Rhode Island. - Transatlantic Race 2011  Amory Ross / Transatlantic Race 2011

For the fortunate few who are racing in this year's Transatlantic race, these are exciting times. The race is sailed pursuit style, with the fastest boats—including the Maltese Falcon and the new Gunboat 66, Phaedo—starting today. Anyone lucky enough to be in Newport Harbor will be in for quite a show during the starting sequences, as some of the world's most impressive sailing hardware winds up for what promises to be one of the great yacht races of the year.

As for the boats that have already started, here's the onboard report from Dawn Star: 'Dawn broke slowly as the fog we've become accustomed to engulfed us once again. The wind grew extremely light and we ghosted along in our own gray bubble; as best we could tell, the edge of the world was only one hundred feet away in all directions. If the world had been flat, we could easily have sailed right off the edge without ever seeing it.' Pegasus - Transpacific Yacht Race

Meanwhile, on the West Coast, our most fabled distance race—the Transpacific Yacht Race—has announced that the race will use an intentional six-hour delay in reporting positions...at least until the lead monohull gets within 100 miles of the finishing line at Diamond Head—then all boats go 'live'. The reason? Tactics and strategy. 'The Transpac has a long history as a race in which navigation matters,' said world-class navigator Stan Honey. 'Using a six-hour delay for the first part of the Transpac recognizes and honors that history. Switching to real-time reports as the first monohull crosses the mark of 100 miles to the finish makes logistics easier for family members and for Honolulu committee members. It will add to the excitement of the finish.'
