Weekend in Review—Sailing News from the U.S. and Beyond

The biggest news is the sailing world right now is the Skandia Sail for Gold regatta, which just wrapped up in Weymouth, England, home of the 2012 Olympic Games. For US SAILING Team AlphaGraphics (USSTAG), this regatta was of extra importance as it's an event that's being used to determine official team berths. 'We were the first fleet to start racing this morning, and the only fleet outside of the breakwaters, but it was perfect sailing again,' reports Anna Tunnicliffe, the skipper of Team Maclaren in the Women's Match Racing event. 'Slightly shifty and puffy but flat water, and sunny. The race committee started on time with the races and the games began.'

While Team Maclaren sailed away with a Gold medal, victory certainly wasn't a given. 'Race two was a bit tighter. Late in the pre-start we had them covered and sailing in our bad air, late for the start. They threw in some tacks, which we were able to match and we extended a couple lengths immediately off the line. By the top mark, we had a four-length lead of which they did a great job of closing up on the downwind leg as they brought pressure down to us. Upwind, we extended again, but on the last run, we got into a gybing duel and they closed right up to us as we matched their every gybe.' Meanwhile, at the Etchells Worlds, which were just contested in San Diego, hometown favorite Bill Hardesty emerged the champion, sailing so decisively that he and his crew did not have to compete in the last day's racing. Interestingly, the San Diego Yacht Club team consisting of Hardesty, Steve Hunt, Mandi Markee and Craig Leweck learned of their victory only after word had already pinged around the world courtesy of social-media services. On the other side of the country, in Rye, New York, the Melges 32 Nationals took place this weekend, with Jason Carroll and the Argo team emerging as the winners. Competition here included Intac Mark Plaxton's well-sailed USVI team, as well as other usual suspects in this highly competitive class.

And in the Bay area, Oracle Racing had their hands full this weekend as they logged a near capsize in the AC45, this one on the windy waters of San Francisco, home of AC34.
