Lighter Winds, Heavier Competition: Sailing News from U.S. and Beyond

While the wind gods relented for the fourth day of the Skandia Sail for Gold regatta, which is currently taking place in Weymouth, England, the competition punched up several notches as the event moves towards its end game. Bigger classes have now been split into Gold and Silver fleets, in preparation for Saturday's medal races. For members of the US SAILING Team AlphaGraphics (USSTAG), this event is a crucial step in determining Olympic berths for the 2012 Games, which will also be held in Weymouth. 'Our goal is to become the fittest team on the planet and it looks like it's working,' said Kenneth Andreasen, USSTAG High Performance Director. 'We have gone through the qualification for gold fleets and now it's time for the athletes to do what they need to do. You can't win a regatta at the beginning, but you can lose it.'

The pressure was equally high for non-USSTAG sailors. 'It was a mixed day, we had three races in tough conditions out there and to cap it all off you then have a very long sail back to the harbor, so I'm looking forward to getting some rest,' said Finn legend Ben Ainslie. 'It's hard out there. It has been a very difficult course because it's quite tidal. We've got two more races tomorrow and then the medal race so things are certainly starting to get into the money end of the regatta.' Check out this issue for full reports, images and other media.

Oracle Racing will continue two-boat testing and in-house racing in San Francisco ahead of the first ACWS event in Cascais  Gilles Martin-Raget/www.americascup.com

If you live near the Bay Area, try and clear some time off your calendar next week as America's Cup Race Management will have two of Oracle's AC45s flying around next week, starting on Monday and going through Friday. 'We learned a great deal about the AC45s when we were in Auckland,' said Principal Race Officer John Craig. 'This month, our focus will be on the systems and technology that our race management team will use to provide the best possible race experience, for the competitors and spectators alike.' America's Cup: Oracle Racing to continue AC45 racing in San Francisco Sail-World, America's Cup Race Management (ACRM) will conduct testing sessions on San Francisco Bay beginning on Monday June 13th, ahead of the first America's Cup World Series event in Cascais in August.
