Tsunami and the ocean
 | | Tsunami hits Crescent City in California . | This week our world has changed forever with the Japanese earthquake, tsunami and the damage to their nuclear power stations.
It will cause much rethinking about the future of nuclear power, but the saddest immediate aspect for sailors who have an affinity with the ocean is the reports of the cloud drifting over the ocean instead of the land.
These reports were greeted with cheering. This is understandable in the short term, but radioactivity falling on an ocean will enter the food chain anyway, as fish are affected, and who knows what other effects there will be on the delicate sea life of the Pacific.
Only time will tell if this is the shake-up necessary for world leaders to take our deteriorating environment seriously, something that most cruising sailors have done for a long time.
Also in tsunami news, read about the damage that was recorded to yachts across the Pacific particularly on the Hawaii and Californian coastlines.
Jarle Andhøy, the Norwegian adventure sailor whose yacht Berserk was lost in the Ross Sea in the Antarctic this month replies to his several critics in an exclusive interview with Sail-World. You can compare stories and make up your own mind...
Read how piracy and the economic downturn have been blamed for the demise of well-known circumnavigation rally, the Blue Water Rally, and delivered a boost to its competitor the World ARC.
You'll also find a jaunty tale of the yacht Tere Moana, and how it was threatened with dismasting by a failing shroud in the South Pacific; and our Product of the Week is a beauty for gentle sailors – the Landing Loop – for making your docking foolproof.
A host of other news from our world's oceans too, so browse down the stories to see what catches your interest.
