Mobile online, risks to GPS, Mumbai show vital to industryThis week, as all our attention focuses on Japan, it's humbling to realise the scope and power of the communication tools that bring us unprecedented volumes of information from all parts of the world. Where journalists and rescuers can't tread, survivors and those in the thick of things are calling, texting, tweeting skyping, producing videoing and being their own broadcasters - helping to raise awareness and specify the help they need.
In the same way, media outlets - including TetraMedia, publishers of MarineBusiness-World, Sail-World and Powerboat-World - are adapting to these new technologies.
The stats are sobering and remind us all that to survive and flourish, you have to evolve. Apple advises it took 608 days to sell the first 1 million iPods; 74 days to sell the first 1 million iPhones and 28 days to sell the first 1 million iPads.
Internet TV and mobile internet browsing are relatively new concepts, but catching on fast. Google predicts that by 2013, more than 50 per cent of web traffic will come from a mobile device.
TetraMedia recorded over 500,000 visitor sessions in December, that is half a million times a boater visited one of our sites.
While our sites are iPad friendly and we receive lots of visits from mobile phones, we will shortly be sensing just what kind of device people are using whether its iPhones, Blackberry, Android smart phone, PC or Mac large screen or small and delivering the news, interviews, video, images in the best format for the device. We are using iPhones for interviews outselves and there will be a range of applications coming from us shortly.
This week, along with all the product and brand news that has happened locally and around the world, we look at a case study of import success from polarized sunglass manufacturer, Barz Optics, whose principal Kevin Barr travelled to METS last year as part of the AIMEX contingent. Five months on, the leads are still coming in and he tells us why the trade-only show was such a boon.
We also look at the risks to GPS systems of interference and deliberate jamming, a new world study into the threats to world reefs and oceans, and an exclusive look at the aims and challenges facing the Mumbai International Boat Show, which is working hard to generate interest and investment in the local boating industry.
