Welcome to Sail-World Canada

Ben Ainslie is the new WMRT Champion!

Christophe Bullens finally arrived in Cape Town earlier this week, completing his first leg of the Velux 5 Oceans solo race. In an amazing display of companionship and solidarity, the entire Velux 5 Oceans team rallied around Christophe after his arrival at the docks; fellow skippers and their shore crews were joined by the race team, chairman Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, Cape Town harbour master Stephen Bentley and even passersby to start work on Christophe's yacht Five Oceans of Smiles Too. Christophe is struggling with a limited window of opportunity to effect repairs and get his yacht ready for the start of leg 2 on December 12th; this reminds me I better keep an eye on the South African weather for my Virtual Regatta start.

In Malaysia, Britain's Ben Ainslie and TEAMORIGIN demonstrated their great form completing the double on Sunday, securing both the 2010 ISAF Match Racing World Championship and the prestigious Monsoon Cup.

Only 24 days to the start of the Barcelona World Race; fifteen duos are currently busy making final adjustments and delivering their Open 60s to Barcelona, Spain ahead of the December 31st start. Many big names and some new yacht designs in this one; it promises to be interesting again! More details in the next few weeks...

In Canada, congratulations to Richard Clarke who was recently awarded British Columbia's Sailor of the Year Award in Vancouver, B.C. Among Clarke's recent outstanding sailing achievements were podium finishes at the 2009 Star North American Championship and the 2010 Star Western Hemisphere Championship, along with several US-IRC events. Also of interest are some early comments about a Canada-wide challenge for the America's Cup led by a group that includes the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club and Royal Halifax Yacht Squadron. The word is they would put together a joint challenge to be run out of the RCYC on Toronto Island and feature an all-Canadian crew.

See you soon!

Phuket King's Cup 2010: pictures, and a taste of sunshine
Guy Nowell, Sail-World Asia,
Two days into the regatta, and a lot more pictures later than you ever see in the press releases and race reports... for the man with the camera, the day started with a stranding on the beach when the camera RIB was discovered to have a punctured tube. Killing has a mind for sailing
Mike Dodd,
Looking at him as he covers the floor of the upstairs office, you'd think Steve Killing is about to start working on someone's 2011 tax return. But it's doubtful the word sailing would come to mind.
