Welcome to Sail-World Canada
Lake Ontario 2010 Update
I must admit my focus was mostly limited to Lake Ontario this past week; as event chair and participant in the Lake Ontario 300 there was a lot of last minute items to be finalized before 182 yachts were finally sent off on Saturday morning. Ron Bianchi warned the entire fleet of high winds and thunder storms during his Skippers Meeting weather briefing on Friday evening; he was spot on! Approximately one third of the fleet eventually retired from the race following a series of fierce squalls overcame racers a few hours after a beautiful downwind start on Saturday afternoon. While some prudent racers dropped their spinnakers in time to avoid the 60 knots wind blasts, many kept pushing and were overcome when hail and torrential rain quickly caught up with them. Good business for the sailmakers!
Most yachts that eventually completed the race did so in personal record times, despite some slow spots along the south shore. Preliminary results are posted on the Lake Ontario website. Flight Simulator was the winner in the Multi hull division where many retired, including Ron White's Cheekee Monkee who capsized but was rescued. The Farr 30 Notorious took first place in IRC 1, while Red Jacket achieved the same in IRC 2.
Double-handed winners on the 300 mile Main Duck Island Course include Upstart (PHRF 1) and Les (PHRF 2); and Dolce Vita (Spinnaker) and For Pete's Sake (Whitesail) the shorter Scotch Bonnet Island Course. The fully crewed divisions were more popular again this year, despite the double-handed origins of this event in the early nineties. As such, many more winners need mention: on the Main Duck Island Course, Jaeger (PHRF 1), Afterburn (PHRF 2), Demon's Dance (PHRF 3), Ragtime (PHRF 4), Pardon Moi (PHRF 5) and Silver Bullet (PHRF 6). On the Scotch Bonnet Island Course, Sebana (PHRF 1 Spinnaker) and Sansei (PHRF 1 Whitesail), Gipsy Wind (PHRF 2 Whitesail), Impromptu (PHRF 3 Whitesail) and Burnin Rudder (PHRF 4 Whitesail).
Lastly, but not least, is the achievement of 11 competitors who completed the race solo under the auspice of the Great Lakes Singlehanded Society. Improving on his 2009 second place finish, Daniel Pavlat is in 1st place this year on his Tartan Ten TAZ; the fleet included yachts of all sizes from Mini 6.5 to Catalina 36. Of particular interest is Gail Bowdish's successful completion of the Lake Ontario Solo Challenge, which entitles her to the distinction of being the first woman to complete a solo event on each of the five Great Lakes; she joins Wally McMinn who achieved this feat in 2009 and Daniel Pavlat who repeated the performance again this year.
Congratulations to all winners and all particpants, we hope to see you again next year. Stay tuned for more announcements regarding the Sperry Cup winner and Team Challenge winners in the days to come. Hopefully, the myth of non-existent July breeze on Lake Ontario is now a thing of the past.
See you on the water!
