Turkmenistan opens its first ever yacht club

by Sail-World Cruising on 12 Jul 2013
New yacht club for Turkmenistan takes it into the modern boating world SW
You won't be able to sail there any time soon, but the central Asian state of Turkmenistan has just joined the ranks of boating nations with the opening of its first yacht club.

The gala festivities stretched into the night and the ceremony was honoured by the presence of no less than the President of Turkmenistan himself. The yacht club is located on the coast of the Caspian Sea - no access to the ocean, but an ocean of a lake to play in. It's very close to the city of Turkmenbashi.

The opening ceremony of the Yelken yacht club, which will be henceforth part of the seaside resort infrastructure, took place on the Caspian seashore. President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov attended the ceremony. A concert of popular singers and artists from Turkmenistan and foreign countries was held at the yacht club in the evening.

The Yelken yacht club built by Turkish Polimeks is a multifunctional complex consisting of a number of buildings and facilities that occupies a total area of 362,000 square metres, of which over 32,000 square metres is the building area. The new facilities include the clubhouse, a harbour with moorings for vessels and numerous recreational and service facilities, such as restaurants, cafes, swimming pools, sports fields and children’s playgrounds and dozens of two-storey villas.

The gala concert concluded with the fireworks that illuminated the night sky over the ancient Hazar with myriad of sparkling constellations.
