The Fifth Annual Zoo Regatta features Weta Trimaran

by Chris Kitchen on 23 Dec 2009
The Wetas amongst the beach party - 2009 Zoo Regatta Simax-Communication

Last month the fifth annual Zoo regatta kicked off in the Caribbean. This year the venue was the beautiful Creole Beach spa and Hotel in Gosier, Guadeloupe.

Other significant changes this year included Zoo regatta introducing the Weta 4.4 trimaran, these boats were generously provided Weta Caribbean. Short triangle courses were set close to the breakwater of Creole beach to allow spectator viewing, event organisers also put on Music and a beach party that was very successful.

The 32 competitors enjoyed consistent 15-20 knots breezes for both days of the regatta (perfect Weta conditions). All 16 teams competed in six races on Saturday; the top 8 teams then competed in two semi-final races on Sunday morning. On Sunday afternoon the fleet was narrowed again to four for the finals series. All races were watched by on water jurors who gave immediate on the water decisions, this made exciting watching. Overall the race committee successfully launched 40 races in two days!

The Zoo regatta's top prize of €1000 was taken out by Claude Thelier, one of Guadeloupe's successful multihull sailors and Pioche Anthony a very promising youth sailor for Guadeloupe.

This event was such a success that throughout the year Weta Caribbean is planning four other events like this in various locations around the Caribbean.
