The Coast Guard Foundation recognized its Commander Daniel J. Christovich Scholarship awardees and 2013 college graduatesat its ninth Annual Tribute to the United States Coast Guard in Our Nation’s Capital last week.

The Daniel J. Christovich Scholarship is generously funded by Lisa Kazor Christovich in honor of her husband's distinguished career in the Coast Guard. The scholars honored at the dinner were Joseph 'Joey' Heimburger of Gloucester, Virginia; Crystal Marietta of Fort Myers, Florida; Kaitlin Long of Denver, Colorado; Katherine Wilson-James of Rohnert Park, California; and T. Ryan Yowell of Salisbury, Maryland. In 2009, each was awarded a $20,000 Coast Guard Foundation scholarship for college.

'Through the tremendous generosity of Mrs. Christovich and other donors, we are proud of our ability to help children of enlisted Coast Guard men and women achieve their higher education goals,' said Anne Brengle, president, Coast Guard Foundation. 'For the first time since receiving the scholarships, the awardees got a chance to meet and thank the Christoviches for their kindness and support, and the Christoviches were able to get to know people whose lives they've greatly improved.'

For over 40 years, the Coast Guard Foundation has been committed to inspiring leadership, learning and a proud legacy of service to our nation by supporting the men of women of the United States Coast Guard, and for the last 20 years has helped family members of brave Coast Guard men and women achieve their dreams of higher education through its scholarship program. Education grants funded by the Foundation’s efforts are available for enlisted members, reservists and their children, and higher education financial support is available for families of Coast Guard members lost in the line of duty.

The Foundation also provides financial relief to Coast Guard families who have lost possessions in natural disasters, and support for morale programs, including funding recreation, exercise and family-oriented facilities.
