Sydney International Boat Show 2024

Santander and Alicante - Nathan unloads, Mat explains, and Nico wins

by Rob Kothe and Sail-world Team on 15 Sep 2014
Outteridge and Jensen (AUS) - Day 7 - Aqueece Rio – International Sailing Regatta 2014 ISAF
Cold, Windy Wet, no we are not in Melbourne, we are in Santander Spain on the Spanish northern coast. The serious racing is starting. Already the Australian squad has qualified Australia for the Laser class in Rio 2016 and now the 470’s and 49ers are in play.

Yesterday Nathan Outteridge the 2012 Olympic 49er Gold Medallist, 2010 and 2014 Moth World Champion and Artemis America's Cup skipper sat down to talk to us in the crowded 49er boat park in Santander. Today we publish just a slice of that interview but it’s quite a slice.

Outteridge is firmly of the opinion that the regatta organisers and ISAF have compromised the 2014 ISAAF organised 49er World Championship experience in the way a class runs World titles would not have done.

Stand by as Nathan unloads

Earlier in the week before the masses of sailors, media and officials arrived we talked to Mat Belcher, Part II of that interview is quite revealing and we had fun as well.

With a success of boats named after Nicole Kidman, I asked Mat Have you got the hots for Nicole Kidman?
No, Mal (Page) and Nathan Wilmot (Australia's Beijing 470 Gold Medallists) started it and it has been a tradition and it has continued. I took over when Mal and I teamed up and I guess I got used to it and it has done us pretty well so I thought yes why not.

You could have knocked everyone down with a feather, Chis Nicolson included with the Danish Volvo Ocean Race Team Vestas Wind wom Race Zero.

Sure, it’s only a practice race, and Brunel wasn’t far behind – just 10 seconds and 100 metres in fact. Team Vestas Wind - they started their campaign two months ago, and today they took the honours.
