Don't miss Lake Mulwala Aquatic Weekend

by Sail-World on 24 Nov 2008
E.C. Griffith Cup - Victorian Speed Boat Club & Yarrawonga Mulwala Tourism SW
The lake is full and the last weekend in November will be the place to be, as thousands flock to the shores of the beautiful Lake Mulwala to be part of an aquatic weekend event not to be missed.

The only drought felt is that by the New Zealand race teams who come to the shores each year in an attempt to wrest the priceless pure silver trophy back to the land of the long white cloud, where it does actually rain! The feature event is Australia’s oldest motor sport trophy and the most fiercely fought boating event between the Aussies and Kiwi’s.

The winning nation hosts the following year’s event. Spectators in their thousands, from both countries watch the world’s fastest power boats compete side by side at speeds over 270kph and since 2001 Australia has reigned supreme.

On the foreshore of the beautiful green lawns there will be an outdoor leisure show with market and food stalls, trade displays made up of outdoor furniture, ski boats, canoes, jet skis and all kinds of water toys.

The real action will be on the water with the world now keeping a close eye on our racing exploits following the very successful recent Union Internationale Motonautique (U.I.M) general assembly on the Gold Coast 2 weeks ago which had
over 60 delegates each representing their nation. Certainly the Griffith Cup was a topic as a powerboat spectacular, even the Chinese have offered to assist teams to China next season to compete at the World Blown Alcohol Displacement (B.A.D boat tiles however the general mood from the countries at the assembly was for ‘Formula FUTURE’.

Whilst the BAD boats and Grand Prix Hydroplanes are at the cutting edge of speed and horsepower, Formula FUTURE also will feature at Lake Mulwala Power. The class is designed for juniors, boys and girls between the ages of 12-17 to have a go at racing and to follow in the footsteps of their heroes such as the McCosker’s, Lupton’s Marlands’, Burton’s, Harrison’s and like.

Formula FUTURE (Fun, Unique, Training, Under, Responsible, Education) will be a world wide focus of the UIM and they acknowledged Australia as a leader worldwide in children’s boat racing. Over the weekend the kids will be seen in the water half a dozen times trying to emulate the feats of their heroes and win their own E.C. Griffith Cup.

The spectacle does not stop their with the annual Yarrawonga Gold Cup being run on the Sunday with the final made up of the two fasted boats from each class of Hydroplane, Displacement and Formula 1 Tunnel boats making for an awesome display of how these different craft each handle the course.

The races will be over four laps of an oval course with speeds of up to 180mph (270KPH) being reached on only 800 metres of straightaway making for huge, spectacular roostertails.

The Victorian Speed Boat Club and Yarrawonga Mulwala Tourism invite all boat racing fans to come and witness the thrills and excitement of powerboat racing at its best.

If it is high power adrenalin flowing action that you’re after, you cannot afford to miss this weekend. So come to Lake Mulwala and watch the Australian and New Zealand powerboats go head to head for the 95th running of the E.C. Griffith Cup, Australasia’s premier powerboat challenge.
