Bermuda to the Land of the Midnight Sun - a sailing adventure


'Sea Dragon is waiting at the dock'    .

You may have to fly, sail or swim there, but if you have a few dollars to spare you'll need to get to Bermuda for the adventure of a life-time next year. In June 2014 there will be an opportunity to sail from Bermuda to Iceland across the subtropical and subpolar gyres of the North Atlantic, to study microplastic pollution abundance and affects on life in the ocean.

The sailing boat is Sea Dragon, a 19m steel hulled sailing vessel built in the UK in 2000. It is one of twelve identical yachts to take part in the toughest yacht race in the world, the BT Global Challenge, sailing around the world against prevailing winds and currents. In 2007 it was acquired by Pangaea Exploration LLC and refit to function as a research vessel with the aim to host and collaborate with different organisations and foundations investigating the pollution levels of our natural environment and the global impact on societies worldwide.

What a rare opportunity. The trip is being hosted by 5 Gyres, with their partner Another World Adventures, who are accepting the bookings. Their promo text says: 'You’ll spend three weeks totally hands-on sailing and learning about sailing and science while working in teams to make the expedition safe and successful.

'Beginning in sunny Bermuda, you’ll sail toward the midnight sun in cool northern climates to Iceland. Both countries, and the 2500 miles between them, promise a one off unforgettable adventure.

'After a few days exploring this stunning isle complete with a spectacular farewell dinner, the Sea Dragon will depart for cooler waters. During this 20 day whirlwind trip through the northern reaches of the Gulf Stream, the crew will learn all they need to know to sail the this exciting vessel – seamanship, sail handling, and navigation.

'The voyage concludes upon arrival to majestic, glacier-capped Iceland – the Land of the Midnight Sun. Whether you are an old pro or a newcomer to sailing, this trip is sure to be awe-inspiring and unforgettable.'
