Australian Hansa Class Championships - Light winds on day 1

by Shauna Phillips on 20 Apr 2014
Russell Phillips (VIC) leads from Michael Leydon (NSW) in the Hansa Liberty race - 2014 Australian Hansa Class Championships Shauna Phillips
As predicted, light winds met the fleet on the first day of competition at the 2014 Dominant Australian Hansa Class Championships at Goolwa Regatta Yacht Club.

The Hansa 303 single-person and Liberty fleets spent a frustrating morning waiting for the wind to strengthen, however, when racing finally got underway, the first race ended up being abandoned when the wind died away again and competitors were sent ashore.

With the AP flag down, and winds improving, the single-person fleets returned to the course after lunch on a shortened course. Chris Symonds (TAS), competing in only his second regatta in the Hansa classes, led the fleet for most of the race in the 303 single-person division and comfortably took the win. In the Liberty division, Michael Leydon (NSW) and Russell Phillips (VIC) battled it out on the first leg of their race, before Leydon skipped away for an easy victory.

In the Hansa 303 two-person race, Chris Symonds teamed up with Neal Rodwell (TAS) to score another win for the day. The 2.3 division completed two races today, with Allister Peek (ACT) continuing his good form from yesterday with two wins.

Racing continues tomorrow, where light winds are expected to continue.
