Cork Olympic Class Regatta completes a fantastic week

by Christine Knott on 25 Aug 2012 Cork Olympic Class Regatta 2012 final day was held on Thursday August 23rd. It was another day of fantastic sailing conditions in Kingston Harbour. Cork brought sailing to those on land via the stadium course off of the breakwater.

The 49er skiff was featured, with some of the best sailors in North America competing. Spectators were able to watch and listen to the commentary by Fiona Kidd, a Canadian representative of the International Sailing Federation. It was a close and exciting race right until the end. Jon Ladha and Daniel Inkpen, of the Canadian National Sailing team, won the Grand Final in the medal race, earning them the 49er North American Champion title. They were followed by David Mori and Justin Barnes of RCYC in second and Matt Dubreucq and Trevor Parekh in third.

The 29er North American champions were Sam Gustin and Ian Woodbury of Vancouver. Jean Matthieu Bolland and Benjamin Strickland from Barrie and Toronto finished in second, and Devan Dube and Greg Simms of Halifax finished in third. In the silver fleet, Victoria Restivo and Liam Charbonneau from Flamborough were first, Damien Robichaud and Simon LeBlanc were second, followed by Rachel Spinelli and Aurora Gordon in third.

On the Finn course, the North American champion was Greg Douglas, who represented Canada in the Finn class at the London 2012 Olympics. Finishing in second was the World Junior champion, Martin Robitaille, and with one point separating them, Darrell Peck, from the USA, in third.

In the Laser Radial Women’s class, Ingrid Merry won the event with her teammate from the Canadian Sailing team, Brenda Bowskill, coming in second and Natalia Montemayor, of Mexico, in third. In the open Laser Radial event, Luke Ramsay, who represented Canada in the 470 class at the London 2012 Olympics, was in first place, followed by Kingston’s own, Hugh Macrae and Sandy Beatty from LYC and RCYC, in third.

In the Laser class, Robert Davis from Kingston sailed a solid regatta and finished in first. He was followed by his Canadian Sailing Team teammate, Tom Ramshaw. In third was Joao Hackerott from Brazil.

There are a number of factors that contribute to the success of this event including the venue, the city, the organizers, and the army of volunteers who give their time and commitment. Thank you once again for your Cork website
