Champagne sailing on Day 2 at the 2013 Port Nicholson Regatta

by RPNYC Events on 23 Feb 2013
Georgia on day one - 2013 Port Nicholson Regatta John Hardie Francolini

With the worst of the Southerly over in done with it was a case of the old saying 'You can’t beat Wellington on a good day' on day two of the 2013 Port Nicholson Regatta. Race officer John Parrish opted to make the most of the conditions by taking the fleet out to Course B by Somes Island and got racing underway with a windward leeward track for both divisions.

After shaking off their problems from day one Kia Kaha was back out chasing hard but was unable to stop Georgia from taking victories on line, PHRF and IRC in race one. Meanwhile in B Division After Midnight shook off the memories of day with a first on general handicap and second on PHRF in the fourth race of the regatta.

Race five of the regatta saw the first use of a triangle windward leeward course for both divisions. Once again Georgia won A Division on line, PHRF and IRC but by very small margins from Kia Kaha with Wedgetail filling the third position. In B Division it was local boat Rosschild’s time to shine with a win on general handicap while Real Deal maintained their strong momentum from previous races by winning on PHRF.

Then it was time for the Harbour Race, a fifteen miler spanning much of the harbour with two long tight reaching legs included in the mix. The story of this race was the match race between Kia Kaha and Georgia with the lead swapping many times throughout and with Georgia taking line honours by just 20 seconds but with Kia Kaha taking honours on IRC.

After three races the provisional leaders in the various handicap systems in the two divisions before protests are:

Div A IRC
1. Georgia 9pts
2. Flying Boat 14pts
3. Wedgetail 23 pts

Div A PHRF
1. Georgia 8pts
2. Flying Boat 18pts
3. Wedgetail 22pts

Div A General Handicap
1. Georgia 17pts
2. Flying Boat 21pts
3. Wedgetail 25pts

Div B General Handicap
1. Real Deal 20pts
2. Rosschild 29pts
3. Saucy Sausage 34pts

Div B PHRF
1. Real Deal 10pts
2. Titus Canby 21.5pts
3. Saucy Sausage 22pts

Racing gets underway tomorrow at 10.00AM with final three races scheduled.
