Spring has arrived to the Sail Canada head office in Kingston, Ontario, but don't assume that Canadians haven't been on the water for some time already this season.
Our national team is hard into their training schedule and fitness testing with Finns, Radials and Lasers in action out of the national training centre located at the Toronto Sailing and Canoe Club. 49ers on Canada's east coast battled snow squalls and 20-30 knots of breeze to train recently out of the Royal Newfoundland Yacht Club. Young sailors at RNSYS were on the water the week before, showing their senior team members what dedication really means.
On the west coast, instructor training began early March in Victoria with a Program Manager module. Lots more exciting new CANSail instructor course material is scheduled for later this month. In addition to all of the early spring training, the Sail Canada semi annual Directors meeting is scheduled this month in Kelowna, BC.
The 2013-2016 Racing Rules of sailing have been released.
Heading into the summer months means being prepared for a fun and safe summer on the water, check to ensure you have your Pleasure Craft Operators Card on hand before you head out and that you have all the necessary safety equipment on board. If you're missing your card please contact the Sail Canada office to issue a new card.
Instructors, please don't forget to update any prerequisites that have lapsed over the winter and pay your instructor dues with plenty of time to spare before the instructing season begins.
Clubs and sailing schools who are running CANSail programs can contact provincial sailing associations with any questions, and those who are not should look into incorporating CANSail into your training season!
This summer is chalked full of regional and national events again, including the Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Youth National Champions in Vancouver, CORK in Kingston and many more, see here for the complete list.
