Life saving skills gained during boating safety course
Thu, 14 Feb 2013
Dreadful weather didn't deter professional and recreational boaters from participating in an offshore boating safety course at a Charlottetown pool on Sunday. WaveSkills Sailing School on P.E.I. teamed up with Sea Survival Halifax to offer the two-day course. The aim of the course was to teach people what to do if they encounter problems while out at sea.
Participants hit the pool at the Rodd hotel in Charlottetown for some water survival training using inflatable boats.
Ellen MacPhail, who runs WaveSkills Sailing School, said hands-on training can mean the difference between life and death.
'It educates one and just helps prepare, so if things go wrong and I can prepare my boat — just by putting contingency plans in place — that process can just give you ease of mind,' she said.
'Just the realization what a person can go through if they're actually in the water during adverse conditions or if they're just trying to prepare their boat, what are all the things they may need and what can go wrong very quickly.'
