Weta Marine's Miranda Powrie and Chris Kitchen must have gotten a little bored at 'work' the other day and decided to start a new sport - singlehanding a weta in the surf off Takapuna Beach on Auckland's North Shore.
For some reason Miranda drew the short straw and got to run the camera while standing in the surf in the middle of the Kiwi winter (about 10degrees C).
Miranda explains: This was in about 15 knots off Takapuna Beach in the tail end of the big Northerly blow last weekend. The lifting centerboard was a lucky accident, Chris didn't mean to run into the beach at that point, but found himself with no choice. Luckily as the centerboard was pretty far up anyway and so a bit looser in the slot.
Chris has heaps of specialized knowledge about the boat, the location and wave sailing. Plus he is known to be a bit silly anyway, hence the nickname 'Damage Man' !
